Knee Surgery, London
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Jig Patel FRCS is based in central London
and he specialises in Knee Surgery and Knee Joint Operations:-
Knee Arthroscopy
Knee Arthroscopy (Keyhole surgery) is where a fine
telescopic camera and surgical instruments are introduced into the knee via very
small incisions. Loose debris within the joint is removed. The rational of surgical
treatment is to remove loose unstable parts of the joint, which may cause jamming,
catching and subsequent inflammation when the joint moves.
The operation is usually used to treat cartilage tears of the knee and used to perform
anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. For the majority of the cases the operation
involves a general anaesthetic. The operation usually lasts half an hour and can
be performed as a day-case procedure.

Arthroscopic Knee Meniscectomy
The Arthroscopic Meniscectomy procedure
is used when you have damaged cartilage in your knee. An arthroscopic meniscectomy
is a procedure in which the doctor uses an arthroscope and other tools to remove
all or part of a damaged meniscus in the knee or, if possible, to repair a meniscus.
A meniscus is a piece of rubbery tissue (fibrocartilage) between the bones of the
knee joint. An arthroscope is a tube with a light at the end that projects an image
of the inside of your knee onto a TV monitor. The arthroscope is about the diameter
of a pencil.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Surgery
Anterior cruciate ligament injuries, usually occur from sports injuries or ski injuries.
The tear of the anterior cruciate ligament, unfortunately cannot heal itself. In
those cases where patients feel that the knee is unstable as a consequence of the
injury the anterior cruciate ligament is substituted by alternative tissue (reconstruction)
Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is an operation, where the original cruciate
ligament is substituted by using the part of the patient's own patella tendon or
part of his or her hamstring tendons. The operation is performed arthroscopically
(keyhole surgery) and can usually be performed as a day-case procedure.
Osteotomy
Osteotomy is an operation to realign joints. Poorly aligned bones place excessive
stress and strain through areas of a joint. This can predispose to and accelerate
arthritis.
The purpose of osteotomy is to realign the joint, so that a more even distribution
of weight can be carried through the joint. This often helps in relieving pain.
Osteotomy is a treatment for very early arthritic change in a joint.
