Anterior cruciate ligament injuries, usually occur from sports injuries or ski injuries. The tear of the anterior cruciate ligament, unfortunately cannot heal itself. In those cases where patients feel that the knee is unstable (despite physiotherapy) as a consequence of the injury the anterior cruciate ligament is substituted by alternative tissue (reconstruction).

Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is an operation, where the original cruciate ligament is substituted by using the part of the patient’s own patella tendon or part of his or her hamstring tendons. The operation is performed arthroscopically (keyhole surgery) and can usually be performed as a day-case procedure.
